Interior vs Exterior Paint: What's the Difference?
By Franschhoek Painters - Expert advice from the professionals
It is a question we get asked surprisingly often: can I use my leftover interior paint for the outside of the house, or vice versa? The short answer is no - and understanding why will save you from an expensive mistake. Interior and exterior paints are engineered for completely different environments, and using the wrong one leads to premature failure, poor coverage and unnecessary repainting costs.
What Makes Exterior Paint Different
Exterior paint has to withstand enormous punishment. On the Cape Winelands, that means intense UV radiation that fades and breaks down paint film, mountain air that corrodes and penetrates surfaces, strong Cape winds that carry dust and abrasive particles, and extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night. To handle all of this, exterior paints are formulated with harder, more flexible resins that can expand and contract with the substrate without cracking. They also contain UV-resistant pigments and additives that resist mould and algae growth - a major concern in our coastal environment. A good quality exterior paint from brands like Dulux Weathershield or Plascon Micatex is designed to stay bonded to your walls for five to ten years under these conditions. Before applying any exterior paint, make sure you follow the steps in our guide on How to Prepare Walls Before Painting - preparation is what determines how long your paint job lasts.
What Makes Interior Paint Different
Interior paints are formulated for an entirely different set of challenges. They do not need UV resistance or the same level of weather protection. Instead, they prioritise washability, low odour, minimal VOC emissions and a smooth, attractive finish. Interior paints use softer, more flexible resins that create a finish that is easy to wipe down and touch up. Many modern interior paints are water-based and dry quickly with very little smell - important in enclosed living spaces. Interior paint is also more sensitive to temperature and humidity during application, which is why our guide on Tips for Painting in the Cape Summer is worth reading before you tackle any interior project during the warmer months.
What Happens When You Use the Wrong Paint
Using interior paint outside is the more common mistake. Interior paint lacks the UV inhibitors and weather-resistant resins needed outdoors. Within one wet season it will start to chalk, crack and peel. The film breaks down rapidly under UV exposure, the binders fail, and you end up with peeling paint that looks far worse than what you started with. Using exterior paint inside is less damaging but still problematic. Exterior paints contain harsher chemical additives - including biocides to resist algae - that are not appropriate for indoor air quality. They also dry to a harder, less washable finish and often take much longer to off-gas properly in a closed indoor environment.
Choosing the Right Paint for Each Surface
The rule is simple: exterior surfaces get exterior paint, interior surfaces get interior paint. But within those categories, there are still choices to make. Choosing the right product depends on your budget, the surface material and the finish you want. Our guide to the Best Paint Brands in South Africa breaks down the main options available locally and helps you compare them on quality and value. For colour selection tips that apply to both interior and exterior projects, see our article on How to Choose the Right Paint Colour.
Special Cases: Kitchens, Bathrooms and Garages
Some interior spaces face conditions that approach outdoor severity. Kitchens and bathrooms deal with steam, moisture and condensation. Garages face temperature extremes and sometimes chemical spills. For these spaces, look for speciality interior paints labelled as kitchen and bathroom paint, or enamel finishes that offer extra moisture resistance. Garages and workshops are often better served with an epoxy floor coating and moisture-resistant enamel on the walls rather than standard interior emulsion.
